October marks a very special time of the year. We have just got out of the Ganesha festivities and getting ready to welcome Maa Durga. Navratri which is celebrated for nine days in different forms across India, honours different forms of the goddess.
In this workshop we will be introducing kids to Garba. Garba is dance form that originated in Gujarat and is performed during Navratri. Garba is said to have derived from the word Garbha Deep where Garbha means Womb and Deep means Earthen Lamp. Traditionally Garba is performed in circles around a picture or statue of Maa Durga or a lit lamp. The dancers thus honor Maa Durga as the feminine form of divinity.
The brightly dressed dancers swirl in unison in circle. Kids will be introduced to this rhythmic dance through simple steps. They are not expected to bring anything. We will not be using Dandiya for this workshop.
