Wood Graining:

Graining is a painting technique thats used to imitate a wood grain on any non-wood surface. Its often used to imitate hard, expensive and rare woods by applying a superficial layer of paint onto soft or inexpensive woods and is one of the most popular paint effects.

The idea of painting wood grain on a surface is not a modern one however, its roots can be traced back to ancient Egypt when pharaohs employed trained craftsmen to simulate expensive wood finishes.

Woods can be divided into two major categories: Hard woods and soft woods. Although soft woods grow rapidly and are relatively inexpensive, they lack the unique character of a hard wood. The latter can be cut to reveal complex grain patterns and beautiful variations. As a result of their distinctiveness, the popular demand for hard woods has greatly reduced the supply of certain species. Mahogany, walnut, oak, chestnut, birds eye maple, rosewood and many others are increasingly rare and extremely expensive.

Learning how to use the graining painting technique will save you a great deal of money and give you a lot of satisfaction.
