Sikki, The Golden Grass of Bihar is a seasonal crop which grows only after monsoon. Found around the wet, marshy areas near the rivers in the Mithila region of North Bihar, the artisans utilize every part of the plant except for the flower. Traditionally used to make simple household products like baskets or roti box, today the art has evolved to producing intricate weaves for a variety of utility items.
In this 2 hour workshop, you will learn about the artisan's journey and get a hands-on experience of creating an intricate and charming Sikki Painting.
Dhirendra Kumar- a self taught Sikki artist from Rampur, Madhubani district in Bihar, India. He studied Ancient History from Amir Hasan Sakur Ahmed College, Bihar and then founded Rachna Sikki Hasthakala Kendra in 2004 with the aim to propagate the art of Sikki 'golden grass weaving and to create employment opportunities for the locals. Today, Dhirendra Kumar continues to train young individuals who contribute to the ecosystem with their delicate weaves and bends of Sikki.
