Warli Painting is a folk art of Maharashtra, traditionally created by the tribal women. Tribals are the Warli and Malkhar koli tribes found on the northern outskirts of Mumbai, in Western India. This art was first explored in the early seventies & from then it was named as “Warli art”. Tribal people express themselves in vivid styles through paintings which they execute on the walls of their house.
Warli paintings were mainly done by the women folk. The most important aspect of the painting is that it does not depicts mythological characters or images of deities, but depict social life. Pictures of human beings and animals, along with scenes from daily life are created in a loose rhythmic pattern.
About the Artist- This workshop will be conducted by Mrs Kusum Kharpade, a traditional Warli artist from Maharashtra. Kusum is widely regarded as an important female Warli artist from the Talasari district in Maharashtra. Having learnt the Warli painting technique from her grandmother, she has been practising it for over 25 years. Kusum teaches Warli painting to women in her village and participates in group shows around the country, having exhibited in Baroda, New Delhi and other cities. She usually depicts the Warli village life, women engaged in day-to-day activities, and other similar topics in her paintings.
About Sanskriti Kendra- All the activities of the Centre are conducted in a low-lying and beautifully designed complex of buildings, the scale and proportion of which are humane and in harmony with the natural environment. Traditional architectural elements are gently imbibed into modern buildings. The campus, gradually developed in stages, houses three museums, a Multi-Purpose hall, an amphitheatre, artists’ studios and dormitories and workshop spaces. It provides a uniquely enabling environment for all Sanskriti’s own activities, as well as for the many NGOs, associations and other civil society organizations that use the facilities for conferences and workshops.
