Mir Taqi Mir famously said about Dilli/ Shahjahanabad: ‘Dilli jo ek shehar tha alam me Intikhab/ Hum rehne wale hain usi ujade dayar ke (Translation: Delhi, the city that once was unique in the universe,/ We are inhabitants of that ruined abode).
When the capital was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi by the British the tag of 'Old Delhi/ Purani Dilli' came to refer to Shahjahanabad. Delhi perhaps has an exceptional distinction where we find multiple layers of history, culture & stories that defined it's charm once.
In its present form of chaos & neglect, the mysteries of its past are not easy for everyone to accept and the complex layers of history are not for everyone to unfold and understand.
Key Takeaways :
- Through this StoryWalk, we shall unravel the many stories around the built spaces of Chandni Chowk, Chawri & Kinari Bazaars, its Havelis, people & their professions, the intermingling of diverse cultures & languages from which emerged it's own intrinsic 'tehzeeb' & 'zubaan'.
- No, we will not bombard you with a heavy dose of history, rather we will understand the people and their lives and how architecture was suited to nature and community.
- Along the way, we will interpret and sketch our own versions of the places. So get your sketchbooks, notepads - whatever way you wish to be creative (writing or art).
- Loads of fun and learning.
