The Sarjapur Blues Band (SBB) is an underground, eclectic, backstreet, workingmen's, original, rhythm and blues band. The duo consists of Shekhar Seshadri, Professor of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, on vocals and acoustic guitar, and Vinoo Matthew, Research Consultant, on electric guitar. The band is 30 years old and has its origin on Sarjapur Road, where we once lived. Our performances are spiked with large dollops of humor. Shekhar introduces our song
‘Lady Nicotine’ as “our world-famous-in-Bangalore song written 30 years ago. At the time, we believed it was our best chance at making it to the Top 40s; but today, we’re more realistic and hope to at least win a Granny Award." We’re an improvisational band, and never play a song the same way twice. The intention is to relentlessly push ourselves into being creative every time we play, so no two performances are quite the same. The alternative, we believe, is ‘chronic competence’ which kills originality. This caused considerable difficulty in defining ourselves, though: what exactly is the opposite of being chronically competent? Don’t try to answer that yourself; the semantics involved require the twisted mind of a psychiatrist with 40 years of professional experience. Shekhar
calls it ‘ephemeral serendipity’.
So, unlike other bands, we’ve never had band-practice. All our performances are practice sessions, where we’re spontaneously creating new ideas. Although the results can sometimes
be quite startling even to ourselves, this isn’t as difficult as it may sound. After 30 years of playing together, we’ve become brothers of the soul: even before one of us attempts something, the other can sense what he’s about to do.
