RETRO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY

When you hear the word photographer, the first thing that comes to your mind is the good old film photographers with their traditional and powerful techniques which played a pivotal role in revolutionizing art but has also made a significant impact on the creative industry.
It is an undeniable fact that the deep memories created inside your subconscious are all the images that are consumed from your childhood. In the age of Instagram and ephemeral digital visuals, Film Photography still holds powerful appeal for many photographers one for the deep connection it offers to the art itself, and another for the ignored skill of traditional silver process.
It is sad to know that the people who are practising this technique are depleting day by day. With an effort to revive this art back into the digital world, we connected with one of the visual artists Arijit Chakraborty whose vision of film photography traditions and the idea that this art as relevant today as it was ever before.
Join us for your first step into the oblivious world and experience the dark arts and visual alchemy of black & white film photography.
This workshop gives a platform to understand learn the skill of black and white processing connecting with those behind this project and get to know them and start embracing and practising the skills in photography which is more relevant to the current photography consumption in the world.

ABOUT THE MENTOR

Arijit Chakraborty is a Calcutta based Bengali Indian visual artist and sound engineer. He was brought up partly in the country-side West Bengal and then Calcutta. He holds a B. Sc. Degree in Economics from Calcutta University.
He holds a diploma in Film and Advance Digital photography and received a P.G. Diploma in professional photography from Light & Life Academy, Ooty which is one the most prominent colleges in south Asia in this field of study. His main expertise is people photography and journalistic approach to capture events and locales. He is a “Herman Technology Influencer” in India. Arijit was accepted in an artist residency at Preet Nagar Residency, Amritsar, India on August 2018. He worked on his photography project of documenting the stories of the biggest free community kitchen of the world, ‘Guru Da Langar’ in Golden Temple of Amritsar.
One of his recent work 'Yesterday' on Calcutta had to be chosen by Alliance française du Bengale for a month-long solo showcase at their gallery in 2018 and in Chennai Photo Biennale 2019. He was consecutively accepted in AGA Lab, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Farside Creative, Leh, India for two separate artist residencies. He owns a state of the art darkroom in the heart of Kolkata where he does all his film processing and printing work.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN?

You will learn how to process your own black and white films and make prints out of those negatives. The workshop is very hands-on and is restricted to few seats only.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING?

You will bring a notebook and an open mind. If you have any exposed roll of film, being that as well.

WHAT WE PROVIDE?

We will provide with chemicals, papers and other apparatus to process and print. Due to time constraints we can not process each and every film the participants will bring.
