While on the Mumbai - Goa road, one can easily notice Karnala Fort - a thumb-like rock resting on a mountain. The fort is famous for its strange thumb shaped pinnacle and the bird sanctuary that is setup in the forest below. Karnala Fort essentially consists of two forts - one at a higher level and other at a lower one. At the center of the higher-level fort is a 125 feet tall basalt pillar, also called Pandu's tower. This pillar was used as a watchtower when the fort was in function. However, now t is largely the remains that are found.

History of Karnala: Karnala was the capital of north Konkan districts under the rule of Devagiri Yadavs and Tughluqs. Subsequently, in the 16th century, the fort came under the command of Portuguese. It was retaken by Shivaji in 1670. Later, it was captured by various emperors like the Mughals, the Peshwas and finally, by the British East India Company in 1818. The Fort was famous for its strategic position, overlooking the Bor Pass that connected the Konkan coast to the interiors of Maharashtra. It formed the main trade route. The Fort was predominantly used as a watchtower as it provided a 360-degree view of the surrounding area.A fort. A sanctuary. Monsoon greenery. It's got all.
