PRESS NOTE:

“I think it’s because it was an emotional story, and emotions come through much stronger in black and white. Color is distracting in a way, it pleases the eye but it doesn’t necessarily reach the heart.” – Kim Hunter
Black and White images are timeless and intriguing - be they be brush paintings or photographs. LANDSCAPE showcases this sophisticated amalgamation of both these genres - Aruna Vasudev with her stylish strokes and Achal Kumar with his amazing captures which propel one to look beyond the mirage he creates with his subjects.

Over several years of discussion and waiting to exhibit together, this synthesis has finally transpired. The journey for Aruna Vasudev has been years of practicing, patience, moving in and out of cities and countries, and yet finding time to do these brush paintings that are so close to her soul. Both the large and the small works depict the detailing she does in each of her works with evenhandedness. Some of her works with branches and leaves, bamboo shoots, chrysanthemums and landscapes are astonishingly her signature works. This is now her passion which she once began as a hobby with friends and associates, attending crash courses while on working trips to Japan and other Asian countries. They also got together as a small group to do these brush paintings. Having painted for nearly a decade and exhibited in India and abroad, she now wants to pursue this passion full time. But knowing Aruna Di (as we all fondly call her) she will be pursuing her calling as a writer, editor, film historian or a Film Festival Director.

A casual meeting with Achal Kumar at an exhibition a few years ago gave birth to this idea of ' jugalbaandi'....... B&W photography and brush painting the same. Through the lenses it was all about composition and controlling of lights, of tones; as a photographer he allowed his imagination to go wild and was able to do justice even to the mirage while focusing on the subject. Very interestingly, Achal grew up in a family that had engaged in business of oils & chemicals from generations. His father is an enthusiastic photographer too and had friends like late S. Paul, T. Kashinath, Kishore Parekh and Raghu Rai etc. visiting home. Achal, spent most of his childhood amongst these Contemporary photographers. He had a chance to interact with them, show his captures and get critical feedbacks while being in and out of the dark room meant for processing. He shares how they are family to him. Having acquired his first camera at the age of 7, he shot extensively, winning prizes in photography contests - national and international and it just carried on into him making a profession in photography working for two most important dailies in the city. His detailed captures of nature, which go from simple branches and leaves to trees on hilly landscapes in black and white, engages a dialogue with its audience. Evidently, his forte lies in B&W photography and for this in the year 1997, he was the Recipient of the "National Award" for photography from "Lalit Kala Academy."

As a curator of this show of Paintings and B&W Photography, "I connect with what I see more in black and white and this fusion of abstraction rejuvenates my senses."
