Indians have started to hop in the Korean style. The pop culture wave from Korea has swept Asia, Europe and U.S, and now arrived in India with numerous world-wide hit songs, even 6 years after the remarkable ‘Gangnam Style’ breakout. Korean Cultural Centre India announces the itinerary of K-pop cover song and dance contest being held in ten cities all around India from 26th May till 30th June. 

The K-pop Contest India 2018 aims to select the Indian representatives for the 2018 Changwon K-pop world festival, the biggest K-pop event in the world.  Since its launch in 2012, the competition has been rapidly growing, as the presence of Korean pop culture in India getting bigger every year. This year over 1,200 participants in 532 teams registered their performance videos, in which they sang in perfect Korean language and executed all dance moves that Korean pop stars do.

Starting from Kolkata on 26th May, the regional rounds will be held by K-pop fan clubs and Korean consulates in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Bengaluru, Odisha, Hyderabad, Mizoram and Manipur between 16th to 30th June.

The winners of each regional rounds will compete again at the final round to make their way to the world stage in Korea. India has witnessed two stars so far, who not only made their way to Korea, but also brought back awards to make India proud. Vocalist ‘Priyanka Mazumdar’ who won 3rd Prize in the 2016 edition, and dance team ‘Immortals Army’ who won 2nd Prize in 2017 edition, defeating the contestants selected among 70 countries in the world.

Mr. Kim Kum-pyoung, Director of Korean Cultural Centre India, said “It’s time to say that K-wave and K-pop finally arrived in India after a long time of insignificant presence. We will witness the strong and enthusiastic fandom of K-pop in India, which will surprise Korean people as well.”

He especially mentioned that even Vh1 India has opened their new segment for K-pop, <K-Popp’d>, after receiving countless requests from the fans last year. In association with Vh1 India, K-pop Contest India 2018 is ready to reach out to other Indian music enthusiasts.
